After six years as an Investment Banker in New York, Hong Kong and London, Sonya Madden traded her calculator for the cutting table and hasn't looked back. All her friends said "What took you so long?" remembering the leather totes and evening dresses Sonya created as a teenager.
Five years ago Sonya launched her design business with the aim to be the leading wrap & cover-up brand for well dressed women around the globe. "The best dressed women are always the best accessorized." explains the designer. "A fantastic Cover-Up is as important as a great bag or a dynamite pair of shoes, but until five years ago there were only pashminas, I wanted to change that."
Sonya is the original creator of the "Cardi-Wrap" which she launched as her signature product in 2002 through NY cult-retailer Henri Bendel. Bendel's was reordering every few weeks just to keep them in stock and Jennifer Aniston, Katie Holmes, and Sarah Jessica Parker were soon wearing the brand. A New York Times article caused such a stampede, that within 24 hours Bendel's had the longest waitlist they'd ever had.
New cover-up designs quickly followed like the Pin-Up, Wrap-lette and Weekend Coat, all in the same luxurious cashmere Sonya has become know for. "Designs can be copied, but quality can't." she explains. She only uses the best yarns from Outer Mongolia or Italy.
Sonya designs for the girl-on-the-go and refers to her designs as "recommendations" since she's a girl-on-the-go too.
In five short years the collection has been carried by the most prestigious stores in the world; from Harrods in the UK, Lane Crawford across Asia and Holt Renfrew in Canada to Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Fred Segal in the US.
In Fall 2006, Kate Spade asked Sonya to custom design a range of cover-ups. The "Kate Spade by Sonya Madden" line was rolled out from New York to Tokyo introducing a whole new audience to Sonya's chic Cover-Ups.
Sonya's collection can be found on celebrities, socialites and girls-on-the-go from LA to London, Montreal to Seoul.
Sonya grew up in Toronto, Canada and currently divides her time between the US and Hong Kong.
